What to expect from mental health support organisations
It’s important for anyone, including autistic young people, to seek and receive appropriate mental health support.
Some autistic people can find it very difficult to ask for help and support. Making appointments can also be challenging. That National Autistic Society has created a useful guide to support young people when seeking help for mental health.
Most professional support is obtained through a referral from a GP.
The GP will ask you questions and offer you support based on what they think might support you best.
Support might include:
- A follow up appointment.
- Advice on lifestyle adjustments like exercise, getting outdoors more or creating healthy habits.
- Onward referral to another service like a counsellor, psychologist or other wellbeing professional for specific support.
- Medication. If your GP recommend medication, they should thoroughly explain its purpose and outline any potential risks and benefits, enabling you to make an informed decision about whether to proceed with the medication.
Mind have created a guide on what to expect from therapy and other mental health and wellbeing providers. They have also created a guide on other treatment options.
